fix(api): avoid native CPU probing in Docker transport - #2143
Prevent Connect/API startup crashes in cpufeatures.node by disabling optional native CPU probing in the pinned SSH dependency.
Why This Exists
Connect/API 4.37.10 has a reported invalid-opcode crash during both CLI invocation and daemon startup. Loading Docker support eagerly imports ssh2, which invokes cpu-features even when Docker uses the local Unix socket. A native SIGILL terminates the process before JavaScript can recover.
Resolution
Use the cipher order that ssh2 already uses when CPU detection is unavailable. Apply one pinned patch through the existing pnpm workspace and npm production-packaging mechanisms.
Reviewer Considerations
Supported ciphers remain unchanged. CPU-specific cipher ordering is removed.
Production packaging installs dependencies with npm, so the workspace patch alone is insufficient.
This prevents the identified native-load path. The precise invalid instruction and the original affected CPU remain unverified.
Behavior Changes
Docker dependency imports no longer invoke native CPU detection. Docker and SSH transport remain available.
Implementation Summary
Patch ssh2@1.17.0 and register it for workspace and production installs.
Add a regression test that rejects any CPU probe and completes real loopback SSH negotiation through the Docker dependency chain.
Make production build errors return a nonzero exit status, with coverage for plain errors and explicit command exit codes.
Pin ssh2 to exactly 1.17.0 in the production npm overrides before applying the version-specific patch.
Verification
Regression failed before the patch and passed after it.
API lint and type checking passed.
Regression plus Docker service/resolver suites: 22 tests passed.
API build passed.
The existing production patch helper applied both dependency patches and passed repeated-build checks.
Release-build failure tests pass. The original handler fails two of the three cases.
A release-manifest regression proves the exact SSH pin is emitted before npm installs dependencies. It fails without the pin and passes with it. Focused tests, lint, type checking, and frozen-lockfile installation pass.
Hosted CI, CodeQL, and the plugin build passed for the initial patch revision. The downloaded x86-64 package contains the patched SSH source and no native CPU probe call.
CI, CodeQL, and plugin packaging passed for final head 14117599f0c605d841c8df3832466f2cc07b6772. The downloaded x86-64 package has the exact ssh2: 1.17.0 production override, resolves SSH 1.17.0 in its npm lock, and contains the patched SSH source without the native CPU probe. Packaged Unraid runtime qualification remains blocked by the QA providers reporting farm capacity configuration path is absent or symlinked. No VM has been reserved or changed.
Do not merge or publish until the final revision passes CI and packaged runtime qualification.
Risk
The code change removes an optional optimization. Release qualification must still verify the x86-64 packaged CLI, daemon, Docker access, restart behavior, and absence of new SIGILL reports.
Tracks CLD-1389. The maintainer approved the scoped fix and requested qualification, merge, and a patch release.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
SSH connections now use consistent default cipher ordering across supported systems. The order no longer changes based on CPU features or native-binding availability, helping ensure the same cipher negotiation behavior on different platforms.
The ChaCha20-Poly1305 cipher is placed at the end of the default list before unsupported ciphers are filtered out, reducing platform-dependent differences in SSH connection behavior.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
The change patches ssh2@1.17.0 to configure the default cipher list without probing CPU features. The workspace and build script apply and validate the patch. A subprocess test checks SSH negotiation without loading cpu-features. The build script now uses exit code 1 when a build error has no truthy exitCode.

A subprocess test intercepts cpu-features loads, constructs Docker support, and negotiates SSH with a local server. It checks for a successful subprocess exit.
No actionable code risk remains identified. Complete the planned CI and packaged-runtime qualification before release.

Make ssh2 patch-validation failures exit nonzero.
If the new ssh2 validation throws an Error, that error has no exitCode. exit(error.exitCode) then exits successfully, so the release build can report success without producing the validated release artifact. Use a nonzero fallback exit code for ordinary errors. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the error exit handling around exit(error.exitCode) so ordinary Errors
without an exitCode use a nonzero fallback, while preserving any explicit
exitCode. Ensure ssh2 patch-validation failures cannot make the release build
exit successfully.

Pin ssh2 before applying the version-specific release patch
In the artifact workflow's fresh build:release run (.github/workflows/build-artifacts.yml:98), npm install --omit=dev has no package lock or override pinning ssh2; upstream docker-modem@5.0.7 declares ssh2: ^1.15.0. Once another matching version is published, the production build may install that version and then apply this 1.17.0-specific patch, causing the release build to fail or patch an unqualified source. Add an exact ssh2: 1.17.0 production override (or otherwise make the npm install consume the pinned version).
