Add Sandbox and Domain names; deprecate the Testing, Inbox and SendingDomain names - #91
Mailtrap now calls Email Testing inboxes sandboxes and sending domains domains, and the OpenAPI spec documents only those names. The Java SDK still exposes testingApi(), inboxId, inboxes() and *SendingDomain* methods. This adds the new names and keeps the old ones working as deprecated aliases, so existing code compiles and runs unchanged. The same rename is being made in the other Mailtrap SDKs.
Changes
new entry points: client.sandboxApi(), sandboxApi().sandboxes(), switchToEmailSandboxApi(sandboxId), MailtrapConfig.Builder.sandboxId(...), and sendingApi().domains() methods named after domains
sandboxes: createSandbox, getSandboxAttributes, updateSandbox, deleteSandbox, cleanSandbox, getSandboxes; the neutral ones (markAsRead, resetCredentials, …) are unchanged
domains: getDomains, getDomain, sendDomainSetupInstructions, deleteDomain; create and update are unchanged
MailtrapConfig.getSandboxId() and Constants.EMAIL_SANDBOX_SEND_HOST
parameters say sandboxId / domainId in messages, attachments, sandbox sending and company info (source-compatible)
every old name still works, delegating to its replacement, and is marked @Deprecated(since = "1.11.0"), so callers get a compile-time deprecation warning and nothing at runtime
covered: testingApi(), switchToEmailTestingApi, Builder.inboxId, getInboxId, inboxes(), the six *Inbox* methods, the four *SendingDomain* methods, EMAIL_TESTING_SEND_HOST
the old interface methods are default methods that call the new ones, so each endpoint is still implemented once
Types keep their names until the next major release (MailtrapEmailTestingApi, Inboxes, InboxResponse, SendingDomains, the request classes and packages): renaming them now would need about 70 deprecated shim classes.
Requests don't change: the SDK still calls the account-scoped /inboxes and /sending_domains paths, because on /sandboxes paths the API returns messages with sandbox_id instead of inbox_id, which would change the models.
Config errors now read "Sandbox API requires sandbox ID" and "Bulk mode is not applicable for Sandbox API".
README uses the new names and gets a "Renamed APIs" table; the examples move to examples/.../sandbox and examples/.../domains and read MAILTRAP_SANDBOX_ID.
Drive-by: the account accesses, accounts, billing and permissions Javadoc said "Testing API"; it now says "General API".
⚠️ Code that implements Inboxes or SendingDomains itself (a hand-written fake, say) has to add the new methods. Mockito mocks and normal SDK use are unaffected.
How to test
You'll need an API token for an account with at least one project, a sandbox and a domain. Build the client with MailtrapClientFactory.createMailtrapClient(...).
Sandbox sending
New config — new MailtrapConfig.Builder().token(TOKEN).sandbox(true).sandboxId(<sandbox id>).build(), then client.send(mail): the email lands in that sandbox
Old config — the same with .inboxId(<sandbox id>) still sends to the sandbox; compiling with -Xlint:deprecation warns about inboxId(Long)
Switch from client — client.switchToEmailSandboxApi(<sandbox id>) then send and batchSend land in the sandbox; switchToEmailTestingApi(<sandbox id>) does the same
Missing sandbox ID — .sandbox(true) without sandboxId throws BaseMailtrapException "Sandbox API requires sandbox ID"; .sandbox(true).bulk(true) throws "Bulk mode is not applicable for Sandbox API"
Sandboxes API
client.sandboxApi().sandboxes().getSandboxes(accountId) lists the account's sandboxes; client.testingApi().inboxes().getInboxes(accountId) returns the same list
createSandbox, getSandboxAttributes, updateSandbox, cleanSandbox and deleteSandbox work on a new sandbox, as SandboxesExample does; the old *Inbox* names give the same results
Domains API
client.sendingApi().domains().getDomains(accountId) and getDomain(accountId, domainId) return the domains; getSendingDomains / getSendingDomain return the same
sendDomainSetupInstructions sends the setup email, and deleteDomain removes a domain created for the test, as DomainsExample does
Regression
Messages, attachments and projects under client.sandboxApi() work as before (MessagesExample, AttachmentsExample, ProjectsExample)
Company info for a domain (CompanyInfoExample) works as before
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added Email Sandbox naming and API methods for managing sandboxes, sending messages, and accessing message details and attachments.
Updated domain operations to use “Domains” terminology.
Added Java examples for managing sandboxes and inspecting messages.
Compatibility
Existing inbox, testing, and sending-domain entry points remain available as deprecated aliases and are planned for removal in a future major release.
Documentation
Updated README examples and API references to use sandbox and domain terminology.
…ain names
The product calls Email Testing inboxes "sandboxes" and sending domains
"domains", and the OpenAPI spec documents only those names.
Decisions:
- Only entry points are renamed (accessors, methods, parameters, config); model,
request and resource types keep their names until the next major, as a full
type rename would need ~70 shim classes
- Old names stay as @deprecated(since = "1.11.0") delegates; interface defaults
keep each endpoint implemented once in the *Impl classes
- API paths stay on /inboxes and /sending_domains, so requests are unchanged
- sandboxApi(), sandboxes() and getSandboxId() are handwritten because Javadoc
can't see Lombok members, and the deprecation notes {@link} to them
- DeprecatedNamesTest checks delegation with Mockito real-method mocks, so a
delegate calling the wrong method fails
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The pull request updates Java API, client, and configuration names from inbox and testing terminology to sandbox terminology, and from sending-domain terminology to domain terminology. Selected legacy entry points remain as deprecated aliases. Examples, tests, and README guidance use the updated names.

Domain operations use shorter domain names. Deprecated methods retain selected sending-domain names. Related examples, tests, and documentation use domain terminology.
The rename is bounded, but a null sandbox switch can fail later, the sample can modify the wrong sandbox, and migration guidance is incomplete. These issues need targeted follow-up, but do not indicate a broad release-blocking failure.

The description follows the repository template. It has Motivation, Changes, How to test, and an Images and GIFs area. The Motivation explains the rename and why old names stay as deprecated aliases. The Changes section lists the new entry points, deprecated aliases, the choice to keep type names and request paths, config error text changes, README and example updates, and a note on custom implementations of Inboxes and SendingDomains. The How to test section gives concrete manual steps. The Images and GIFs section is absent from the description, which is acceptable because it is not relevant to an SDK change. The How to test checkboxes are unchecked, and the PR objectives state the results were not reported. The author should record those results before merge.

Note the implementer exception in the README migration section.
The README says the old names "still work," which holds for code that calls them. A custom Inboxes or SendingDomains implementation is different: the new sandbox and domain methods are abstract at head, so an implementation that supplies only the former abstract methods no longer compiles. The migration section should say this, for example: "Custom implementations of Inboxes and SendingDomains must add the new methods."

Running the example can rename and clean an existing sandbox, deleting its messages, while leaving the new sandbox untouched.

src/main/java/io/mailtrap/client/MailtrapClient.java:157-159 Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win
Reject a null sandbox ID in switchToEmailSandboxApi before changing the sender state.
Passing null enables sandbox mode without a sandbox ID. The next send or batchSend unboxes that null into the primitive long sandboxId parameter and throws NullPointerException before any request is sent. MailtrapConfig rejects the same combination, so this method should reject it too. The check runs before setSandboxId and setSandbox, so a rejected call leaves the current sending state unchanged. The deprecated switchToEmailTestingApi delegates to this method, so it gets the same check.

Assert the POST and DELETE requests in the setup-instructions and delete tests.
test_sendDomainsSetupInstructions has no assertion. test_deleteDomain checks only that no exception is thrown. Both SendingDomainsImpl methods return void, so a regression that skips the POST or DELETE request still passes both tests. TestHttpClient does not record which requests it served.
Every test in this class registers all six mocks in init. A global check that every configured mock was used would fail in unrelated tests. Record the requests that reach TestHttpClient, then assert the specific request in each test.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The example unconditionally requests HTML analysis of the first message before performing its other demonstrations; this may fail for a plain-text-only message, stopping the program.
Later retrieval, update, and forwarding examples do not run.
This can occur when: The first sandbox's first message has no HTML content or HTML analysis is unavailable for it.

The alias test for switchToEmailTestingApi now checks the delegation instead of
repeating MailtrapClientTest's sandbox send, so the class needs no HTTP mocks and
takes its IDs from BaseTest. assertSame on exact-argument stubs already proves
delegation, so the extra verify calls are gone, and test labels are derived from
the reflected members.

Make the sandbox send test fail when the sandbox switch does nothing.
test_sendSandbox_success switches to the sandbox API and then calls send. Its sandbox host mock and the default sending host mock return the same message ID, "11111". A missing or incorrect switch routes the message to the default host. The test still passes.
Give the sandbox send mock a response that differs from the default one, then assert that ID in test_sendSandbox_success. Alternatively, assert the request URL that the mock received. Either change makes the test fail when the sandbox route is not used.
