Summary

Declining UAC during a silent per-machine update closes OpenScreen and leaves it closed. Launch the verified cached NSIS installer through the bundled elevate.exe before requesting the app's normal quit. Refusal restores each window's input state and leaves the downloaded update available for retry; acceptance runs normal before-quit cleanup and lets NSIS replace and restart the app.

Only a confirmed single per-machine installation uses this handoff, with /allusers pinning the intended target. Registry-query failures reject without quitting; exit 1 establishes absence only after a successful parent-key enumeration confirms it. Confirmed per-user/dual-copy installations and other platforms retain their existing installer flow. Installer paths are passed as separate arguments without a shell; the bundled helper's result distinguishes refusal (Win32 error 1223) from other launch errors.

A pending handoff blocks competing updates and new takes. Downloading leaves the windows usable; immediately before elevation, a late check rejects active or preparing recordings and unsaved editor changes. Browser and native Windows capture reserve startup before asynchronous preparation, without moving capture timestamps or reporting a started take early. Failed startup releases the reservation, restores MCP preferences, and closes pending recording streams. Browser preview mode acknowledges the reservation through its shim.

Testing

  • Node 22.22.1 / npm 10.9.4, private npm ci dependencies. Final head f0bc69c5c: 39 affected tests in 2 files, both TypeScript checks and Biome passed, as did the same tests on its prepared frozen-branch backport. Broader review passes covered 181 tests in 23 files and the Vite build; Biome has 35 existing warnings.
  • Full local suite earlier in this task: 372 files, 5170 passed and 6 skipped. Every job in final-head CI passed, including the complete suite and platform build checks. CodeRabbit completed its requested final review successfully without new findings; all inline threads are resolved. The optional receiver extraction for a tray-state test was deferred with the reason recorded in the review discussion.
  • Regression coverage includes UAC refusal/retry, concurrent handoffs, interactive downloads, late install veto, asynchronous quit, literal installer paths, helper/pipe errors, registry failure, browser reservation ordering, pending stream cleanup, and rejected MCP starts. Pending-blob and queued-write gates verify cleanup ordering. A read-only probe of the actual registry confirmed HKLM present / HKCU absent with the final registry function.
  • Actual Windows No, then Yes passed on the unchanged baseline CI payload: build 41403466483, artifact 13122961511, source 5e34328f1, before the review guard additions. ZIP digest and entire extracted native payload verified; app.asar remained unchanged. With a local generic 9.9.9 feed serving the verified official rc.4 installer, the maintainer clicked the update and answered UAC. No kept the same app process responsive; retry with Yes ran normal quit, installed rc.4, and restarted it automatically with --updated. HKLM remained the only NSIS installation. Only the extracted test payload's update-feed configuration was overridden.
  • The original published rc.3 refusal was reproduced through the actual GitHub feed: no app process for 108.8 seconds after No, with rc.3 still installed. Evidence and Partial QA logs are prepared locally, outside this PR. Later review guards have the automated coverage above; final-candidate desktop QA is separate. Capture/editor/export and other platform runtime slices were skipped in this update test.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(updater): keep OpenScreen running when UAC is declined" matches the main change. The PR makes Windows silent per-machine updates hand off through the bundled elevate.exe so that declining UAC no longer closes the app. The title is short, specific, and names the affected component (updater) and the behavior fixed.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It includes a Summary, a Related issue (Fixes #1461), a Type of change (Bug fix checked), Release impact (Patch checked), Desktop impact (Windows and Installer / packaging checked), and a detailed Testing section. The Screenshots / video section is absent. The template marks it as optional for UI or visual changes, and this PR does not make visual changes. The Testing section includes commands, environment details, and CI links.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#1461] requires that declining UAC leaves OpenScreen running and lets the user retry the downloaded update. At head f0bc69c, installSelfUpdate in electron/auto-updater.ts takes the Windows handoff only when nsisInstallStatus confirms HKLM is installed (status 0). Any uncertain registry result rejects before quit. The handoff calls installWindowsUpdate in electron/windows-update.ts. That function downloads the installer, runs the canInstall check, and spawns elevate.exe with the installer path, --updated /S --force-run /allusers as separate arguments, and no shell. It does not call app.quit() unless the helper succeeds. A helper exit of 1 whose stderr ends with could not be launched: 1223 returns false. The finally block then re-enables the saved windows and clears updatePending, so a later update attempt can run. Other helper failures throw. The reg query exit-1 path confirms absence only after the parent key enumerates successfully. Per-user and dual-copy installs keep the existing quitAndInstall path. The code establishes the refusal and retry behavior. The PR reports automated tests for refusal, retry, and registry failures. I did not read the test files. The real-Windows No/Yes run used an earlier payload, and the 1223 detection matches helper stderr text. Both points are documented and do not change the verdict.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes support the #1461 handoff. The pending guard (updatePending, assertWindowsUpdateIdle) blocks competing updates while UAC is pending. The late canInstall check blocks the handoff when recording or unsaved editor changes exist. The handoff quits the app, so an active take or unsaved editor state would be lost. Browser and native capture reservations (setRecordingState with reserveOnly, preparing flag, shim acknowledgment) close a race where a new take starts during the download window. Stream-cleanup ordering in recorderHandle.discard and the MCP startTake rollback cover failed startups in those same guarded paths. The Windows-only gating keeps other platforms on their existing flow. No unrelated change is demonstrated. The reservation and cleanup work is broader than the single refusal bug. It is still connected to safe quit during the handoff.

Docstring coverage is 36.84% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 19 functions across 17 files.

Major follow-up Reject unsaved editor changes before the update handoff disables windows.

71-73: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Reject unsaved editor changes before the update handoff disables windows.

When elevateInstaller approves the handoff, it disables every window, calls app.quit(), and sets handedOver. If the editor close handler prevents that close (electron/main.ts:1107-1117), the quit does not complete. The finally block then skips restoring windows and skips clearing updatePending. The app keeps running with all windows disabled. Recording and update retries stay blocked until restart. Nothing in electron/windows-update.ts clears either state.

installBlock and blockedFromInstalling do not check editorHasUnsavedChanges. The handoff can therefore start with unsaved editor changes.

Add an unsaved-changes check after the installer download completes and before setEnabled(false) runs. Windows stay interactive during the download, so edits made during the download must be caught. Run the check in the same synchronous step as the window disable, with no await between them. If changes exist, reject the handoff and show the user the reason through the blocked-install message path (showBlockedInstall). This rejection happens before handedOver is set, so the finally block clears updatePending, and no window has been disabled. Pass the editor state from electron/main.ts into installWindowsUpdate, through installSelfUpdate.

Minor follow-up Handle error on the elevation helper's stderr pipe.

54-54: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Handle error on the elevation helper's stderr pipe.

child.stderr has a data listener but no error listener. If the pipe emits an error, Node raises it as an uncaught exception. installMainProcessErrorGuards rethrows any code other than EPIPE, ECONNRESET, or ERR_STREAM_DESTROYED, so the main process can exit before the disabled windows are restored. Add a no-op error listener. The close handler still decides the outcome.

Suggested fix
 			child.stderr.setEncoding("utf8");
 			child.stderr.on("data", (chunk: string) => {
 				stderr += chunk;
 			});
+ // A pipe error must not escape as an uncaught exception; the close handler decides the result.
+			child.stderr.on("error", () => {});
 			child.once("error", reject);

Addressed the two review-body follow-ups in 3a1c237 as well:

  • Unsaved editor changes: main now supplies a synchronous readiness callback through installSelfUpdate. It is re-evaluated after cache verification/download, immediately before the window-disable/elevation step with no intervening await. New unsaved changes abort before UAC and are reported through the existing localized blocked-install dialog. The pending guard is released and windows have not been disabled. A deferred-download regression covers this case.
  • Stderr errors: the helper pipe has its own error listener, while the helper outcome remains authoritative. A regression emits an actual stream error and verifies cancellation still restores input.

The browser start reservation is also covered by regression tests. All 172 affected tests and both TypeScript checks pass locally; Vite and lint pass. CI is running on the new head. The timeout recommendation was withdrawn in its thread after confirming that killing the helper cannot establish cancellation of a late installer launch.

Minor follow-up Keep the app running when the HKLM check is inconclusive.

125-125: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Keep the app running when the HKLM check is inconclusive.

A null second nsisInstallStatus("HKLM") result skips the elevation branch and calls quitAndInstall(true, true). The app quits before the UAC prompt, so declining leaves OpenScreen closed. The base had this behavior for every silent install, so the PR does not add it. The PR leaves this case unfixed.

Minor follow-up Close the recording streams when webcam setup fails.

2168-2169: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Close the recording streams when webcam setup fails.

When createRecorderHandle throws for the webcam recorder, the screen stream is already open on the main process and has a partial file on disk. The catch clears both refs and tears down the media tracks, but it does not close that stream.

Calling discard() alone does not close it. discard() skips the close while the stream open is still pending. The screen open request is sent before the webcam handle is built, so it is still pending when the catch runs. discard() must wait for the open to settle before it checks whether the stream opened.

Suggested fix

In src/hooks/recorderHandle.ts:

 	async function discard(): Promise<void> {
+		await openPromise.catch(() => undefined);
 		if (streamOpened && fileName && api?.closeRecordingStream) {
 			await api.closeRecordingStream(fileName);

Nitpick Assert the reservation call before recorder construction.

183-184: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Assert the reservation call before recorder construction.

The test named releases the claim when recorder construction fails checks only toHaveBeenCalledWith(false). That matcher passes for any setRecordingState(false) call. It does not check that the first call is the true reservation or that the reservation happens before createRecorderHandle runs. A change that removes or reorders the reservation can keep this test green.

Add the ordering check to the same test:

Addressed the latest review in 7287894:

  • The browser shim now acknowledges setRecordingState reservations and releases with { success: true }, covered by a shim test.
  • Installation selection snapshots both registry queries once. An inconclusive result in either hive now rejects without quitting; confirmed machine/user/dual-copy modes keep their intended behavior. Both failure cases have regression coverage.
  • Failed browser/webcam setup retains its recorder handles, disables automatic finalization, stops and drains them, then discards their streams. discard() now awaits a pending open and queued writes before closing. Regression tests cover delayed open and partial setup failure.
  • The construction-failure test verifies that reservation is the first state call and precedes recorder construction.
  • Windows native startup now claims the take before cursor/helper awaits. The main process distinguishes preparation from an actual started recording, so update handoff is blocked without moving the timer/cursor time origin or announcing a take before the helper is ready. Failed startup releases its own claim.

Validation on this commit: 181 affected tests across 23 files passed; both app and test TypeScript checks, Biome (35 existing warnings), and Vite build passed. A full local suite was run earlier in this task; the new CI run will cover the final full suite. The real No/Yes Windows pass remains attributed to the earlier unchanged CI payload 5e34328, before these review guards.

Minor follow-up Do not treat every status-1 reg query result as a missing install.

127-131: Minor · Functional Correctness · Poor tradeoff

Do not treat every status-1 reg query result as a missing install.

Microsoft documents reg query exit code 1 as a general failure. installSelfUpdate maps status 1 to "absent" for both hives. On a dual-install machine, a failed HKCU query can therefore select the silent /allusers path, which updates the HKLM copy. Distinguish a confirmed missing key from other failures before choosing silent mode. This behavior predates the PR.

Based on learnings: "check that silent-mode selection accounts for both HKLM and HKCU installations. If both installations exist, retain the installer wizard to avoid silently updating the wrong copy."

Nitpick Add a test where the startup blob settles after the failed stop.

209-211: Trivial · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Add a test where the startup blob settles after the failed stop.

The startup catch waits for recordedBlobPromise before it calls discard(). The current test resolves that promise immediately. As a result, the test cannot distinguish the gated cleanup from cleanup that runs at once, so a regression that removes the wait would still pass. A case with a pending blob can assert that discard() waits for it.

Nitpick Test the preparing receiver behavior, not only the forwarded call text.

40-40: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Poor tradeoff

Test the preparing receiver behavior, not only the forwarded call text.

electron/ipc/recordingStateRouting.test.ts checks only that setAppRecording forwards preparing. The receiver in electron/main.ts decides what the tray shows. It sets isRecording = recording && !preparing, and the tray shows Stop Recording whenever isRecording is true. A change that derives isRecording from recording alone would still pass the current test.

Add a behavioral test that calls the receiver with recording = true and preparing = true. Assert that isRecording stays false and that the tray is built in its non-recording state. Assert that recordingStartPending is true. This closure lives inside electron/main.ts, which has process-wide side effects. Moving the receiver body into a small module that the test can import would make this practical.

Nitpick Add a test for a queued write that discard() must drain before it closes the stream.

260-267: Trivial · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Add a test for a queued write that discard() must drain before it closes the stream.

The pending-open test does not queue a write. Chunks emitted while the open is pending move into writeChain when the open resolves. The await writeChain in discard() keeps closeRecordingStream from running while those writes are in flight. Removing that await passes the current suite, because the pending-open test emits no chunk and the streamed-discard test drains the chain before it calls discard().

Add this test beside the pending-open test:

	it("discard drains a chunk queued while the open is pending before closing", async () => {

		releaseAppend();
		await discarded;
		expect(closeRecordingStream).toHaveBeenCalledWith("rec.webm");
		fake.stop();
		await handle.recordedBlobPromise;
	});

If the await writeChain is removed, the close runs before the gated append resolves, and the first not.toHaveBeenCalled() assertion fails.

Review comment at @src/hooks/recorderHandle.test.ts around lines 260 - 267:
Add a test beside the pending-open test in `recorderHandle.test.ts` that emits a
chunk while the stream open is pending, then calls `discard()` and resolves the
open. Gate the resulting append and verify `closeRecordingStream` has not run
until the append is released and `discard()` completes; retain the final close
and recorder cleanup assertions.

Addressed the remaining registry and cleanup-test follow-ups in 949af2f:

  • Confirmed Microsoft's documented reg query exit contract: status 1 is a general failure. On that result, the code now enumerates the parent Software key successfully before it can classify the NSIS key as absent. If the key is listed, or enumeration fails, the result is inconclusive and update installation is rejected without quitting. No localized error text is parsed. Regression tests cover both hives with an existing but unreadable value and parent-query failure; existing dual-install tests still require the wizard. A read-only probe of this exact function against the actual Windows registry returned HKLM present / HKCU absent as expected.
  • Strengthened the existing failed-start cleanup test with a pending blob: it asserts discard has not run after stop, then releases the blob and observes discard.
  • Strengthened the pending-open discard test with a chunk buffered before open and a gated disk append: close must wait for both open and the queued write.
  • I am deferring the optional receiver-module extraction requested solely for a tray-state test. The current receiver sets the two flags directly and the tray consumes the actual-recording flag. Introducing another module for these assignments would expand this release fix without correcting a runtime defect. The existing syntactic routing test is identified as such; it is not presented as behavioral tray coverage.

Validation: 48 affected tests in 3 files, both TypeScript configurations and Biome passed. The fresh CI will run the complete suite before merge. The full prior head (7287894) already passed all CI jobs. No additional app/UAC interaction was triggered.

Nitpick Assert the filename passed to appendRecordingChunk.

260-263: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Assert the filename passed to appendRecordingChunk.

The appendRecordingChunk stub ignores its (fileName, buffer) arguments. A flushed chunk written to the wrong file would still pass this test. The payload is already checked by the streaming-order test, so this assertion only needs to cover the filename.

Review comment at @src/hooks/recorderHandle.test.ts around lines 260 - 263:
Update the test’s appendRecordingChunk stub to retain a reference to its mock,
then assert that the flushed chunk is appended using the expected recording
filename. Keep payload verification in the existing streaming-order test.
