Make the forge's input limits settings, raising the artifact ones [] - #465
The artifact entry, central directory, diff, and sparse-checkout pattern caps are now settings (ACKNOWLEDG_FORGE_MAX_ARTIFACT_ENTRIES, ACKNOWLEDG_FORGE_MAX_ARTIFACT_DIRECTORY_BYTES,
ACKNOWLEDG_FORGE_MAX_DIFF_BYTES, and ACKNOWLEDG_FORGE_MAX_SPARSE_PATTERNS), and their errors name the setting to raise. The artifact defaults rise to 500,000 entries and 64 MiB, and the diff's to 64 MiB.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Improvements
Added configurable limits for pull-request diffs, sparse-checkout patterns, and artifact contents, including entry counts and directory size. Requests that exceed these limits now produce errors identifying the relevant limit.
Documentation
Documented the new limits and their defaults, including how diff size and artifact directory size can affect memory use, and how pattern counts can affect checkout time.

Walkthrough
Forge resource limits can now be set through environment variables. The configured values control sparse-checkout patterns, artifact extraction, and diff retrieval. The service passes these values to workspace and artifact processing.
Pattern generation accepts a configurable cap. The processor passes the configured cap for changed-file and failed-test patterns. Tests cover duplicate and distinct patterns against explicit caps.
Artifact extraction accepts configurable entry-count and central-directory byte limits. The processor passes both settings when staging artifacts. Tests cover entry limits, including inner tarballs, and central-directory size boundaries.
Workspace diff retrieval uses the configured byte limit, which the service and test harness pass to Workspaces. Documentation lists all four limits. A parameterized state test checks limit-specific errors.
edgcpp/compiler#385: Adds fixed Forge limits for sparse patterns, artifact extraction, and diff output, which this PR makes configurable.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 66607
This change makes the forge's input limits configurable and raises the artifact and diff defaults. A misconfigured limit of zero or a fraction is not rejected at startup and only fails later during pull-request processing. The diff-size error does not tell operators which setting to raise. The larger 64 MiB diff default could also strain the service's 2 GiB memory limit under concurrent large diffs. These should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merging.
Security architecture risk: High · up to 66607
The larger defaults admit substantially more pull-request-controlled data without increasing the deployment’s memory budget. A crafted pull request can put processing for other reviews at risk. Existing size limits, concurrency controls, and retries provide containment, but do not bound the memory amplification during parsing.
Retained concerns
High · security · inferred: Increasing the accepted test diff fourfold weakens availability containment in the shared Forge service. Pull-request content reaches eager diff.splitlines() allocation before sparse-pattern enforcement and before builder isolation. The checked-in deployment retains its 2 GiB service memory limit and default concurrency of two, so amplified allocations can disrupt processing beyond the originating review.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A contributor able to supply tests/ content in a pull request selected for processing can exercise the enlarged diff budget. Processing slots and memory belong to the shared Forge service rather than to that review, so availability impact can extend to other repositories handled by the same instance. Cross-instance, cross-environment, and tenant-wide impact are not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The retained denial-of-service finding follows pull-request-controlled diff text into eager line-list allocation. Many short lines can amplify memory before the pattern limit rejects input. This parsing behavior predates the PR; the materially worsened condition is accepting four times as much input under the unchanged deployment memory budget. The assessment is static rather than a measured exhaustion demonstration.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Artifact extraction retains separate extracted-byte and entry budgets, charges inner tarballs to the same budget, checks central-directory size before opening the zip, and rejects escaping paths and symlinks. Raising the thresholds does not remove these checks. Attacker control over CI artifact contents remains conditional on artifact provenance.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Bounded git collection terminates the subprocess on excessive stdout or cancellation. Ordinary staging failures remove temporary directories, and artifact downloads are removed in finally blocks. These existing recovery paths contain partial work but do not impose an aggregate memory budget on successful-size inputs.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Parse diff lines incrementally and enforce a processing-memory budget before eager allocations. Validate the larger defaults against worst-case short-line inputs, concurrent artifact processing, and the deployed memory limit; retain lower thresholds until that budget is established.

Explanation
The title names the main change: the forge's input limits become configurable settings, and the artifact limits are raised. The changeset adds environment-variable-backed settings for artifact entries, artifact central-directory size, diff size, and sparse-checkout patterns, and it raises the artifact defaults. The title is short and specific. It does not list every limit, which is acceptable.

Keep the 16 MiB diff default until the diff is streamed, or bound the sparse-pattern scan.
changes_patterns() builds the full list of diff lines before any pattern limit applies. A pull-request author controls the tests/ diff. The forge service can run two processing attempts at once, and its container has a 2 GiB memory limit. Two line-dense diffs near the new 64 MiB default could exceed that limit and stop the service. The peak memory has not been measured.
Revert the default in dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/config.py:
Restore the 16 MiB default

Also update the ACKNOWLEDG_FORGE_MAX_DIFF_BYTES default in dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/README.md (line 117). Before raising the default, measure peak memory with two concurrent near-limit diffs. Raise it only after the diff path streams, or after changes_patterns() bounds its allocation.
