test(stack-encrypt): consolidate duplicate expectations into the shared corpora - #1507
Stack Encrypt (the Rust engine behind CipherStash's per-field encryption) has a shared conformance corpus under conformance/stack-encrypt/v1: JSON files of inputs and the exact engine answer expected for each, run natively by Rust test binaries and again through the WASI guest by the Go module, so both languages are held to one set of expectations. Several older hand-written tests in the Rust crate and the Go module were asserting the same expectations row for row, which meant a change to an engine diagnostic had to be made in two or three places and the copies could drift.
This PR removes those duplicate rows and leaves the shared corpus as the one place each expectation lives. Nothing about how the engine behaves changes; the same expectations are now checked once, by both languages. Before any old row was removed, a fault was introduced by hand into the engine (a swapped reason, a null read as absent, a type check skipped, and so on) and the replacement conformance runner was confirmed to fail on it. Every removal, its case IDs, its runner and that evidence are recorded in a new Consolidations section of conformance/stack-encrypt/coverage.md.
Changes
Rust test deletions (packages/stack-encrypt/src/dynamic/record.rs and query.rs, unit-test modules only, no production code touched)
Removed whole: a_malformed_plan (24 rows), a_null_is_refused_as_its_key, a_missing_or_null_index_payload_is_the_default, refuses_a_malformed_plan_before_any_field_is_built (17 rows), a_null_in_a_field_with_no_null_mode_is_refused, a_stored_null_is_refused_through_a_plan_that_has_no_null, a_row_with_every_field_left_out_is_an_empty_record, a_stored_record_may_leave_out_only_a_sql_field, a_query_the_field_does_not_answer_is_refused_naming_the_field (10 rows), and the refusal rows of block_ore_refuses_text_it_has_no_term_for_before_any_term (its accepted-text index assertion stays as accepted_block_ore_text_derives_a_block_ore_term, below).
Trimmed to the shapes the corpora cannot spell (raw passthroughs, repeated keys, non-object rows, integer/bytes contexts): refuses_a_field_context_that_is_not_a_label (6 of 9 rows), a_source_that_does_not_fit (3 of 9), encrypt_and_check_source_refuse_it_alike_with_no_key_request (3 of 11 plus two encrypt checks), a_stored_record_that_does_not_fit (5 of 7: the repeated field and the record that is one leaf stay, since the read profile stores every record as a batch), and the 6-row table of the_typed_paths_query_refusals_are_made_before_any_term, renamed folded_equivalents_derive_one_term for the one-term assertions that stay.
Unused helpers refused_plan and age removed with their callers.
Added a_plan_refusal_names_its_field_in_the_message: the removed plan-refusal rows also checked, through expect, that a Plan or Context error names its field in the message, which the corpus (codes and payloads only) does not compare.
Added accepted_block_ore_text_derives_a_block_ore_term: the corpus records that the longest text, text with an interior NUL and empty text are accepted by a block ORE field, not which index answers; the test asserts the term's index is IndexSpec::OreBlock, for one bound and both bounds of a range.
Go test deletions (languages/golang/encrypt)
guest_test.go: TestAPlanRefusalNamesItsReason removed (output-duplicate is a host plan and a frame in the declaration runner, on both guests).
query_test.go: the QueryTerm refusal table, inverted range and short-match checks of TestAQueryTheFieldDoesNotAnswerIsRefused removed; the Verify/TargetLimit refusals stay as TestVerifyAndTargetLimitRefuseWhatIsNotAMatchQuery. fixture_conformance_test.go and fixture-contract.md name the new test.
Corpus enrolments (so every old row has an exact home rather than a neighbour)
conformance/stack-encrypt/coverage.md: new Consolidations section (old test, shared case IDs, replacement runner, the fault it fails on) and the list of tests considered and kept with the reason; the policy paragraph no longer says no test has been deleted.
The three restored assertions each fail under the fault that survived without them: the whole-record non-map arm of record_rows reported as outputs_not_map, in_field_text dropped from the Plan and Context messages, and a block ORE query term carrying IndexSpec::Ore instead of IndexSpec::OreBlock (left: Ore, right: OreBlock).
As first opened, on the earlier base:
Run from the worktree with STACK_CONFORMANCE_REQUIRED=1 where it applies.
cargo fmt --all --check: clean (after one blank-line fix).
mise x --env test -- cargo nextest run -p stack-encrypt -p stack-encrypt-derive --all-features: before 1125 run, 1125 passed, 1 skipped (44 binaries); after 1115 run, 1115 passed, 1 skipped (44 binaries): the ten whole-test removals, no binary removed.
Go, with all four guests built (wasm:guest:build, :deterministic, :eql, :eql:deterministic): CGO_ENABLED=0 go test -count=1 ./... before 282 top-level tests passed, 72 skipped (live-provider tests without credentials), 0 failed, all 10 packages ok; after 281 passed, 72 skipped, 0 failed, all 10 packages ok (the one whole-test removal; the trimmed test keeps its slot under its new name). go vet ./... and gofmt -l . clean.
bash scripts/stack-conformance.sh: exit 0 (69 Rust runner tests passed; the selected Go tests ok; the fresh Go-to-Rust artifact exchange passed)
npx vitest run scripts/__tests__/stack-conformance*.test.mjs scripts/__tests__/crates-ci.test.mjs scripts/__tests__/tests-workflow-gate.test.mjs: 53 passed; stack-eql-conformance and stack-lifecycle-conformance suites: 10 passed.
Fault-injection proofs (each fault applied to the engine by hand, the named runner run under STACK_CONFORMANCE_REQUIRED=1, then the fault reverted; the runners that collect failures list every case, the ones that stop at the first name it):
outputs_not_map and no_ciphertext_node reported as other reasons; a missing field tolerated by every null mode; a sealed null accepted by a plan with no null mode
output-duplicate on both guests; every refusal case including the five the old Go table held (matches-on-integer, lte-on-match-only, unknown-operator, between-scalar, lt-text-for-integer), 241 subtests in all
Mutation safety: the Mutants gate runs --in-diff, so a mutant resurrected in an unchanged engine line by a deleted test would not be seen by it. Every deleted Rust row above names the shared-runner test that kills the same mutant, and the fault table is that claim exercised by hand: each fault is a mutation of the line the old row pinned, and the shared runner killed it.
Stacked on #1505 (feat/stack-encrypt-coverage-gaps), which sits on #1503.
Review notes
Start with the Consolidations table in conformance/stack-encrypt/coverage.md; every code deletion maps to a row there.
Deliberately kept, with the reason in that section:
decrypt_and_check_record_refuse_it_before_any_key_is_retrieved (record.rs): five of its thirteen shapes are the engine guards the transport reaches natively alone (repeated field, output and key; a passthrough inside the ciphertext subtree; a passthrough field carrying a ciphertext), and it is the module's load-bearing forged-plaintext check with its retrieval counter.
refuses_fields_under_different_contexts_or_extensions, refuses_two_fields_keyed_under_one_identity: one shared row each beside shapes the corpus has not got.
tests/op.rs typed refusals: the corpus records the typed chain's refusal stage, not its via, batch, case-sensitive and bound-order assertions.
Go TestPlanCheckAnswersWithoutACipher, TestQueryTermRefusesWhatTheFieldDoesNotAnswerBeforeState, TestGuestRefusesMalformedInputsBeforeState, TestCheckerRefusesAnIndexedUntypedField: about the uninitialised instance answering ErrEncoding before ErrState, or the host rule refusing before the engine, which the corpus runners do not observe.
Everything on the issue's retain list (compile-fail, ownership and zeroization, batching, property, frozen-bytes, generated-code, host conversion, error wrapping, cancellation, guest lifecycle, PostgreSQL oracles, live-provider tests).
No CI workflow changed: no test binary was removed, only tests inside existing binaries. No changeset: test and conformance-doc changes only, no published surface moved.

Walkthrough
The change adds five shared conformance cases and consolidates Rust and Go test assertions around shared corpus coverage. It also updates the coverage map and plan with replacement evidence and retained test details.
Changes: Conformance case consolidation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Add shared declaration and query-refusal cases conformance/stack-encrypt/v1/declarations.json, conformance/stack-encrypt/v1/query-refusals.json
The declaration corpus adds cases for an unknown output, passthrough with outputs, and an invalid target. The query-refusal corpus adds two between cases for ORE block length and trailing-NUL refusals.
Align Rust tests with shared coverage packages/stack-encrypt/src/dynamic/query.rs, packages/stack-encrypt/src/dynamic/record.rs
Rust query and record tests remove or narrow cases covered by shared corpora. Updated tests retain folded-equivalence and selected native-only checks, including source and stored-record cases.
Update Go tests and record consolidation evidence languages/golang/encrypt/*, conformance/stack-encrypt/fixture-contract.md, conformance/stack-encrypt/coverage.md, docs/plans/2026-10-31-stack-encrypt-conformance.md
The Go query test now checks Verify and TargetLimit refusals, and the required-fixture list and contract use its new name. A duplicate-output test was removed. The coverage map and plan document removed assertions, replacement cases, runners, and retained tests.
Issue 1477 — The PR adds shared query-refusal cases and removes duplicate Rust query-refusal rows. The issue also requests value and raw-frame coverage gaps that this PR does not address.
Issue 1317 — The PR changes the query-refusal test surface and reuses shared refusal coverage, but does not add the requested typed-chain and binding table test.

Explanation
The PR maps the removed duplicate rows to shared case IDs and runners in conformance/stack-encrypt/coverage.md. It adds the five stated corpus cases and reports Rust and Go execution. It also retains the issue-listed test categories. However, block_ore_refuses_text_it_has_no_term_for_before_any_term lost its accepted block-ORE term-selection assertions. Those assertions check OreBlock selection, not refusal coverage. Issue #1481 requires unrelated assertions in mixed-purpose tests to remain. The PR description confirms that this gap remains.
Resolution
Restore the accepted block-ORE term-selection assertion in a retained Rust test, or add an equivalent focused test with the same coverage. Update the consolidation documentation and verification evidence.
Checked every deleted or trimmed row at the base (5c81d83c1) against its named corpus case and runner. I also re-ran five of the author's fault injections and three faults of my own, and reverted each one (git status clean afterwards).
Author's faults, reproduced:
missing_context reported as unknown_key failed declarations at missing-context.
not_a_range reported as field_type stopped query_refusal_conformance at between-scalar.
The block ORE length refusal reported as the NUL refusal stopped it at ore-block-too-long.
A missing field tolerated in source_row stopped runtime_conformance at required-missing.
The same fault in record_row failed read_conformance on missing-field, late-missing-field, sql-absent-as-required, sql-absent-as-sealed and context-drop-tenant.
All five match the table.
My faults, on rows the author did not fault separately:
Removing the equality normalisation pre-check in check_input was caught at eq-unassigned (check_query returned Ok).
The two faults under Spec survived the full nextest run (1115 passed). Those are lost assertions.
Spec
CONFIRMED, lost assertion. The top-level non-map arm of record_rows (packages/stack-encrypt/src/dynamic/record.rs:2672) is no longer checked.
What was lost: the deleted "not a map" row of a_stored_record_that_does_not_fit passed a bare leaf to check_record and asserted Record, no field, not_an_object.
Why the replacement misses it:row-not-map cannot reach this arm. read_conformance always reads a batch (mutate requires CipherText::Sequence), so it hits the batch-item arm at :2668.
Evidence: changing :2672 to OutputsNotMap leaves the whole suite green. The kept decrypt_and_check_record_refuse_it_before_any_key_is_retrieved checks only Error::Record, not the reason.
CONFIRMED, lost assertion. Nothing now checks that a Plan or Context error message names its field.
What was lost: the deleted a_malformed_plan and a_null_is_refused_as_its_key rows went through expect (record.rs:7522), which also asserts error.to_string().contains(field).
Why the replacement misses it: the corpus compares the code and payload, never the message. The expect calls that remain cover only Source and Record.
Evidence: dropping in_field_text(field) from the Plan and Context#[error] attributes (dynamic/mod.rs) leaves the suite green. The Error doc promises the field "is in the message and in the ErrorPayload".
PLAUSIBLE.frame-duplicate-key repeats only a top-level field. The deleted rows also repeated a key inside a spec (context, outputs) and inside a match option.
Spec-level repeats stay covered by the kept a type given twice and a context_field key given twice rows.
Repeats inside match options are vitaminc's frame guard.
coverage.md:189 says the case covers "any depth", but it covers one.
PLAUSIBLE. The deleted block_ore_refuses_text_it_has_no_term_for_before_any_term asserted that an accepted block-ORE query derives an IndexSpec::OreBlock term. shared_query_refusal_profile checks only that accepted cases succeed. I did not fault this.
Met:
The retain list is untouched.
The typed tests/*.rs suites are untouched.
No production code or frozen fixture changed.
Every removal cites a fault, not just enrolment.
The Postgres and live tests stay.
Standards
CONFIRMED.languages/golang/encrypt/query_test.go:319-321: the old three-line doc comment ("A query the field does not answer is refused…") still sits above the new one. It describes the assertions that were removed.
CONFIRMED. Two rows of the relationship table in conformance/stack-encrypt/coverage.md are stale:
:80 still lists a_malformed_plan, a_null_is_refused_as_its_key and a_missing_or_null_index_payload_is_the_default as existing evidence still to be consolidated.
:140 names TestAQueryTheFieldDoesNotAnswerIsRefused, which was renamed.
Both contradict the new Consolidations section.
CONFIRMED.coverage.md:189 and the PR body say a_malformed_plan had 27 rows. It had 24 at the base.
CONFIRMED.coverage.md:205 says output-duplicate covers the deleted Go test as "a host plan … and a frame". It doesn't, as a host plan:
checkDeclarationCases sends a host plan through Checker.Check.
Its Validate refuses repeated outputs (internal/record/record.go:420) before the engine is asked.
For host plans the runner asserts only ErrEncoding.
Only the frame half observes the engine's reason. The deleted test reached the engine through engineCheck(Plan.Wire()).
Spec: 4 findings (2 confirmed). The worst is the top-level non-map record arm, which no test now pins. Standards: 4 findings (4 confirmed). The worst is the stale coverage-map rows that contradict the new section.
…ed corpora
The shared conformance corpora under conformance/stack-encrypt/v1 now hold
the declaration, runtime, read and query-refusal expectations that several
hand-written tables in the stack-encrypt unit tests and the Go module were
also asserting, row for row. Keeping both means every change to an engine
diagnostic is made twice and can drift between the copies. This removes
the duplicate rows and leaves the shared corpus as the one place the
expectation lives, executed natively by the Rust runners and through the
WASI guest by the Go runners.
Ten Rust tables in src/dynamic/record.rs and src/dynamic/query.rs come out
whole and five are trimmed to the shapes the corpora cannot spell (raw
passthroughs, repeated keys, non-object rows, integer and bytes contexts).
In Go, TestAPlanRefusalNamesItsReason goes and the QueryTerm table of
TestAQueryTheFieldDoesNotAnswerIsRefused goes, leaving its Verify and
TargetLimit refusals under a name that says so. Five cases are enrolled
so every old row has an exact home: output-not-string,
passthrough-with-index and target-number in declarations.json,
ore-block-between-long-low and ore-block-between-nul-high in
query-refusals.json.
No row went before a fault introduced by hand into the engine (a swapped
reason, a null read as absent, a non-default match option, a missing field
tolerated, a type check skipped, a range bound unchecked, the Go host
dropping the diagnostic's reason) made the named replacement runner fail
under STACK_CONFORMANCE_REQUIRED=1. coverage.md's new Consolidations
section records each table, its case IDs, its runner and that evidence,
and lists the mixed-purpose tests kept with the reason. Compile-fail,
ownership and zeroization, batching, property, frozen-bytes,
generated-code, host conversion, error wrapping, cancellation, guest
lifecycle, PostgreSQL and live-provider tests are untouched.
Refs #1481
…ls the corpora cannot see
The read profile stores every record as a batch, so its row-not-map case
reaches the batch-row arm of record_rows and never the whole-record one;
the shared corpora compare codes and payloads, never the message. Both
were held only by rows the consolidation removed. A record that is one
leaf is back in a_stored_record_that_does_not_fit, and a plan and a
context refusal naming their field in the message are pinned by
a_plan_refusal_names_its_field_in_the_message.
The branch was rebased onto origin/feat/stack-encrypt-coverage-gaps (now dd6e8088e) and force-pushed with --force-with-lease. The new head is e4ea49708. The original consolidation commit is now 20ccbb503. The rebase applied cleanly: the base commits change only conformance tests, corpora and docs, not the engine.
Spec
Top-level non-map arm of record_rows: no test checked it. Fixed in 0c8c6ec4d. a_stored_record_that_does_not_fit again passes a bare leaf to check_record and expects Record, no field, not_an_object.
The fault from the review (:2672 reporting OutputsNotMap) now fails this test.
Before the fix, the same fault passed all 1115 tests.
Nothing checked that a Plan or Context error message names its field. Fixed in 0c8c6ec4d. The new test a_plan_refusal_names_its_field_in_the_message runs one Plan refusal (missing_context) and one Context refusal (context_kind) through expect, which checks the payload and the message.
The fault from the review (in_field_text(field) dropped from both #[error] attributes) now fails it.
It is a two-row check of the message only. Which reason each shape gets stays in the corpus (missing-context, context-null).
frame-duplicate-key covers one depth, not "any depth". Fixed in the wording, in e8482c27e. The coverage row now says the case is a field given twice, and that a key repeated inside a spec stays covered by the kept a type given twice and a context_field key given twice rows.
A repeated match-option key is vitaminc's frame guard, so no engine row was restored for it.
Accepted block-ORE queries are not checked to derive an OreBlock term. Declined in this PR.
The old assertion was about which index answers, not about a refusal. The refusal profile's accepted cases record no index, and adding one would change the corpus schema for both runners.
The field in question declares only ore_block, so index selection has a single candidate there.
This is still unfaulted. Open it as a follow-up if wanted.
Standards
Stale doc comment on the renamed Go test (query_test.go:319-321). Fixed in e4ea49708.
Stale rows in coverage.md. Fixed in e8482c27e.
:80 now describes the removed plan-refusal tests and where the message check went.
a_malformed_plan "27 rows". Fixed in e8482c27e: it now says 24, and the PR body is updated. a_stored_record_that_does_not_fit now reads "5 of 7 rows removed", and row-not-map is no longer listed as its replacement.
The output-duplicate host-plan claim. Fixed in e8482c27e. The row now says:
the host plan is refused by Validate before the engine sees it;
the frame is what observes the engine's reason;
TestCheckerRefusesAnIndexedUntypedField still reaches the engine through engineCheck.

Checked the Go test deletions and the five new corpus cases against the cases the removed tests relied on (inverted-range, matches-too-short, unknown-operator, between-scalar, lt-text-for-integer). Each one exists in the shared corpus. The Rust test deletions in record.rs and query.rs were not re-verified line by line. The earlier review comment and its fixes cover them. Not run: tests, fault injections.
Restore direct check_source assertions for the shared source refusals.
The corpus checks missing, unknown, and mistyped fields through encrypt. It does not exercise the separately callable check_source path for those errors. The retained cases do not cover their check_source propagation or error mapping.

Restore direct `check_source` test cases for missing fields, unknown fields, and
mistyped values. In the existing source-refusal cases, add inputs and expected
error mappings for `FieldMissing`, `UnknownField`, and `FieldType`, alongside
the retained cases, so these errors are verified through `check_source` rather
than only through `encrypt`.
The shared query-refusal corpus records that the longest text, text with
an interior NUL and empty text are accepted by a block ORE field, but not
which index answers them. Restore the native assertion that the term's
index is IndexSpec::OreBlock, for a single bound and for either bound of
a range, and record it as retained in the coverage map.
Pushed 5886092 for the CodeRabbit finding on the accepted block-ORE cases. The shared query-refusal corpus records that the longest text, text with an interior NUL and empty text are accepted by a block ORE field, but not which index answers them, so removing block_ore_refuses_text_it_has_no_term_for_before_any_term dropped the check that the term is a block ORE term. The new accepted_block_ore_text_derives_a_block_ore_term in query.rs restores it for one bound and both bounds of a range, and fails when query_term is changed by hand to return IndexSpec::Ore (reverted afterwards). The Consolidations row in conformance/stack-encrypt/coverage.md now lists only the refusal cases and records the index assertion as kept. cargo fmt --check, clippy and biome check are clean; nextest: 1119 run, 1119 passed, 1 skipped.

Summary
Stack Encrypt (the Rust engine behind CipherStash's per-field encryption) has a shared conformance corpus under
conformance/stack-encrypt/v1: JSON files of inputs and the exact engine answer expected for each, run natively by Rust test binaries and again through the WASI guest by the Go module, so both languages are held to one set of expectations. Every removal, its case IDs, its runner and that evidence are recorded in a new Consolidations section of

--in-diff, so a mutant resurrected in an unchanged engine line by a deleted test would not be seen by it. Every deleted Rust row above names the shared-runner test that kills the same mutant, and the fault table is that claim exercised by hand: each fault is a mutation of the line the old row pinned, and the shared runner killed it.Related

Start with the Consolidations table in
conformance/stack-encrypt/coverage.md; every code deletion maps to a row there.Deliberately kept, with the reason in that section:
decrypt_and_check_record_refuse_it_before_any_key_is_retrieved(record.rs): five of its thirteen shapes are the engine guards the transport reaches natively alone (repeated field, output and key; a passthrough inside the ciphertext subtree; a passthrough field carrying a ciphertext), and it is the module's load-bearing forged-plaintext check with its retrieval counter.refuses_fields_under_different_contexts_or_extensions,refuses_two_fields_keyed_under_one_identity: one shared row each beside shapes the corpus has not got.tests/op.rstyped refusals: the corpus records the typed chain's refusal stage, not itsvia, batch, case-sensitive and bound-order assertions.TestPlanCheckAnswersWithoutACipher,TestQueryTermRefusesWhatTheFieldDoesNotAnswerBeforeState,TestGuestRefusesMalformedInputsBeforeState,TestCheckerRefusesAnIndexedUntypedField: about the uninitialised instance answeringErrEncodingbeforeErrState, or the host rule refusing before the engine, which the corpus runners do not observe. No CI workflow changed: no test binary was removed, only tests inside existing binaries. No changeset: test and conformance-doc changes only, no published surface moved.
