fix: derive server useId values from tree position - #102
A separate prefix collision also occurs on main: the first server/hydrated field and a new client-only field can both receive app-0; the new namespaces use _app-R_0_ and _app-r_0_ instead.
On main, packages/redact/src/server/dispatcher.ts:129-131 uses a shared render-order counter, and packages/redact/src/dom/dispatcher.ts:464-472 lets an explicit prefix erase the server/client distinction.
server walk
- shared counter follows render completion order+ fork bigint tree positions, including empty and iterable child slots+ reset hook-local counters at each component+ retain tree positions across Suspense retries+ reuse the leading-bit helper used by client tree IDs
client root
- tree IDs only with identifierStrategy: 'react'+ tree IDs by default; separate R_ hydration and r_ client namespaces
Added regressions in tests/ssr-tree-ids.test.tsx:
hydrates tree-position IDs after boundaries resolve out of order (prefix %s) [2 cases]
separates explicit-prefix hydrated IDs from new client IDs and other roots
matches nested arrays, empty slots, iterables and useId parents with deep descendants
Existing literal-ID expectations change without removing DOM-identity assertions; a patch changeset accompanies the runtime change.

Walkthrough
Server rendering now derives useId values from React tree positions. The walker carries tree IDs through child traversal and suspended-boundary re-renders. Tests cover hydration behavior, and size-check scripts add SSR-specific allowances.
Changes: SSR useId tree-position identifiers

Summary
SSR frame and ID format packages/redact/src/dom/react-ids.ts, packages/redact/src/dom/root-internal.ts, packages/redact/src/server/dispatcher.ts
The SSR frame now tracks tree and local IDs. useId formats identifiers from those values, and roots always set ri to true.
Tree-slot traversal and suspended re-renders packages/redact/src/server/walk.ts, packages/redact/src/server/stream.ts
The walker assigns tree IDs to child positions, sets and restores frame IDs during component rendering, and passes boundary tree IDs into re-renders.
Hydration validation and SSR size allowances tests/ssr-tree-ids.test.tsx, tests/hydration.test.tsx, tests/mixed-renderer-hooks.test.tsx, scripts/compatibility-size-budget.mjs, scripts/size-check.mjs, tests/compatibility-size-budget.test.ts, .changeset/ssr-useid-tree-position.md
Tests cover tree-position IDs across hydration and streaming cases. Size-check scripts add SSR-specific allowances, and a patch changeset records the update.

The tree-position ID change has no established merge-blocking defect. Additional size-allowance test assertions are optional follow-up; deploy matching server and client runtimes together because the default ID format changes.

Explanation
The title "fix: derive server useId values from tree position" matches the main change. The PR changes server useId generation in packages/redact to derive IDs from React-style tree positions (treeId and localId in SSRFrame, walk.ts, dispatcher.ts) instead of a shared render-order counter. The title is specific, short, and in a conventional commit form. It does not describe the test updates or size allowances, which is expected.

Adding independent browser confirmation of the released bug and this proposed fix. This currently blocks our streamed-SSR adoption evaluation.
To rule out application/configuration mistakes, we used a standalone complete HTML document with renderToReadableStream, native bootstrapModules, and hydrateRoot(document, sameTree). The HTTP response forwards the renderer's stream unchanged. Suspension uses documented use(stablePromise), with promises created outside render. This test imports the renderer's public entries directly and contains no Start, Router, Base UI, application code or Vite aliases.
The tree has two suspended fields (A and B) separated by a synchronous parent/field. Fields use useId() for their input/label/help associations; the parent also uses an ID. We resolve B before A, waiting for B's emitted segment before releasing A, then wait for both fields in the intended main element before hydration. Server and client both use identifierPrefix: 'app-'.

Same fixture passes; no hydration errors, captured nodes/IDs retained.
The ready-ID control and a plain streamed-content control pass on both released runtimes and this PR. Separately, our unchanged generic Vite fixtures pass both default-prefix and explicit-prefix ID cases with this PR, after failing on the base.
This supports attribution to Redact's runtime rather than our app or stream wrapper. It does not establish a surviving duplicate-ID defect: after recovery, the released runtime's final label controls work. We have not qualified a complete application, performance, or a combined/released version of these fixes.
Environment: Linux, Bun 1.4.4, React/ReactDOM 19.3.1, Playwright 1.64.1, Chromium 156.0.8078.4, NODE_ENV=production. The published 0.2.2 tarball was integrity-checked; the source-built base and PR variants used the same build toolchain.
Compare every hydrated descendant by reference so identical replacement markup cannot satisfy the adoption regression.

November 3 follow-up: the streamed useId failure still reproduces with published @tanstack/redact@0.2.6, using the unchanged fixtures from my earlier report.
The standalone witness uses public package entries, use(stablePromise), native bootstrapModules, an unchanged complete-document stream, and hydrateRoot(document, sameTree). Server and client use identifierPrefix: 'app-'; B resolves and its emitted segment is observed before A resolves. There is no application code or Vite plugin in this comparison.
React 19.3.1 retains the streamed field nodes and matching IDs without hydration errors.
Redact 0.2.6 reports two recoverable hydration mismatches, replaces the A/B fields and changes their IDs while preserving the synchronous middle field.
Ready-ID and plain-stream controls pass under both renderers. The separate unchanged Vite ID cases, with default and explicit prefixes, also pass under React and fail under Redact.
Correction to my October 28 report: my statement that final label controls work after recovery was too broad. That holds for the Vite fixture's full-root recovery, but not for the standalone full-document case. After all three field layout-effect commit signals and two animation frames, its captured DOM contains these collisions:
ID
Elements sharing it
app-0
A's input and the preserved section
app-1
A's help span and the preserved middle input
app-2
The middle help span and B's input
The middle and B fields also record label.control === input as false. Reviewing our retained 0.2.2 result found the same final snapshot, so this corrects my earlier interpretation; it is not a newly introduced 0.2.6 regression. The preserved uniqueness/label assertions inspect the pre-hydration state, so this additional finding comes from the captured post-commit DOM. It does not establish behavior after arbitrary later interactions.
We also compared the relevant ID and hydration source on main at a2e7e1297af8696bad0ce6d1daf76c92c9590aff with the 0.2.6 release: those implementations are unchanged. This is source inspection, not a browser run of an unpublished main build.
Since this PR was closed without merging, was it superseded by another fix or tracking issue? If not, would a separate open issue be the preferred place to track the unresolved streamed-ID defect and this reproduction?
Environment: Linux, Bun 1.4.4, React/ReactDOM 19.3.1, Playwright 1.64.1, Chromium 156.0.8078.4, esbuild 0.28.0, NODE_ENV=production. The published package's SHA-512 matched npm metadata, and renderer isolation was verified. Fixture trees, assertions and event schedules were unchanged. The five original external-store/Router regression cases still pass under both renderers. These are focused renderer checks, not full-application or performance qualification.
Thanks for the follow-up, especially the correction about the final label associations. This has not shipped or been superseded by a released fix. Keeping the reopened PR as the place to track it makes sense, no separate issue is needed.
AI review notes: I have prepared a local integration on current main, preserving the newer compact Suspense boundary records and carrying the tree ID through retries. The focused ID/hydration checks pass, including added checks for unique IDs, label.control, and help references after hydration. Types also pass after a clean locked dependency install. The full suite, current production browser witness, and size review still need to finish before this can land. Earlier browser evidence is retained, but I am not treating it as proof of the current integration or of the exact complete-document case in your follow-up.

Add assertions for the other SSR allowance rows.
The new test in tests/compatibility-size-budget.test.ts checks only full, server/index, react19. A missing or mistyped default, nano, or react18 server row returns 0 and still passes this test. The size script then fails on those rows, so the regression is reported, but only by the size job.

Extend the assertions around compatibilitySizeAllowance to cover the server rows
for the default and nano profiles and the react18 target, verifying their
expected gzip and brotli allowances so missing or mistyped rows fail this test.

The complete-document browser check now confirms the fix handles the reported ID and label problem. Thanks for updating the branch, the runtime files match the candidate that was tested.
AI review notes: On main a2e7e129, the local candidate passes 2,089 tests, types, build verification, and a fresh production Chromium witness using use(stablePromise), an unchanged complete HTML stream, and hydrateRoot(document, sameTree). Boundary B is observed in the emitted stream before A is released. After the three field commits and two animation frames, React and the candidate retain the original inputs and IDs, with unique IDs and correct label/help associations. Published 0.3.0 reproduces two hydration mismatches, duplicate IDs, and two wrong label controls.
All five runtime file blobs match updated head afd53bb7. The local regression tests also check associations after hydration. This is focused renderer coverage, not full-application qualification. Current size measurements still need their exact allowances, replacing the old-base tables rather than carrying those forward. Normal CI and review gates remain before merge, nothing has been released from this PR.

Why the change
Suspended server renders must produce the same useId values as hydration, without colliding with IDs allocated by later client mounts.
