🎯 Goal

The attachment preview Retry buttons and the voice recorder called AttachmentManager.uploadAttachment(). That method is removed in stream-chat v10, and it skipped the pre- and post-upload middleware. For example, an integrator's prepare step that compresses images was skipped on a retry. This moves them to uploadFile(), which now takes an existing attachment, retries it in place and runs that middleware.

Depends on GetStream/stream-chat-js#1991. Until a stream-chat release with it is out and stream-chat is bumped here, type checks fail on the uploadFile(attachment) calls.

🛠 Implementation details

  • These now retry through uploadFile(attachment):
    • the Retry buttons in AttachmentPreviewList, for audio, video, image, file and unsupported previews;
    • the Retry button in VoiceRecordingPreviewSlot.
  • The voice recorder (useMediaRecorder) uploads the recording it built through uploadFile(recording). The recording keeps its waveform, duration and type.
  • As before, nothing is uploaded while the composer accepts no uploads (AttachmentManager.isUploadEnabled).
    • That check lives in uploadAttachmentIfEnabled.
    • The preview lists get the handler from useRetryAttachmentUpload.
    • Both are internal and not exported from the package.
  • The examples/ai-chatbot retry uses uploadFile with the same check.
  • Tests:
    • Each retry button calls uploadFile with the attachment, and does nothing while uploads are disabled.
    • The voice recording slot retries.
    • The recorder uploads through uploadFile, and skips the upload but still sends while uploads are disabled.

🎨 UI Changes

None. Checked in the vite example with the mock CDN and failing uploads:

  • A failed image, text file and voice recording each retried in place: same id, same order, finished.
  • The pre- and post-upload middleware ran on each retry.
  • A retry that failed again stayed in place as failed, with one notification.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Attachment retries and voice recordings now respect the composer’s upload setting, preventing uploads when attachments are disabled.
    • Sending a message after recording still proceeds when uploads are disabled.
    • Retrying failed attachments now uses the current upload flow across image, video, audio, file, and voice-recording previews.

The attachment preview Retry buttons, the voice recording slot and the
voice recorder called the removed AttachmentManager.uploadAttachment(),
which skipped the pre- and post-upload middleware. They now call
uploadFile(attachment), which retries in place and runs that middleware,
and still do nothing while the composer accepts no uploads.

Needs the stream-chat release that lets uploadFile take an attachment.

Merge Risk: High · up to 31585

Attachment retries and voice recording uploads now rely on a stream-chat API that the currently declared dependency does not provide. Type checks fail, and retries may not keep the existing attachment in place. Bump stream-chat to a release that includes this API before merging. Also confirm that a voice recording rejected by upload middleware is not sent and discarded.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix: retry attachment uploads through AttachmentManager.uploadFile" matches the main change. The PR replaces the removed uploadAttachment() calls in the attachment Retry buttons, the voice recording slot, and useMediaRecorder with uploadFile(attachment), with the upload-enabled check kept in place. The title is specific and short, and it names the primary change.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has the Goal, Implementation details, and UI Changes sections. The Goal explains why the change is needed: uploadAttachment() is removed in stream-chat v10 and skipped pre- and post-upload middleware. Implementation details list the changed retry paths, the upload-enabled check, the example app change, and the tests. UI Changes states None and gives the manual verification steps. It also notes the dependency on GetStream/stream-chat-js#1991 and the type-check failure until stream-chat is bumped.

Do not send and discard a recording rejected by upload middleware.

If pre-upload middleware discards the recording, uploadFile returns without adding it to the attachment manager. This callback still calls sendMessageFn(), announces success, and runs recorder.cleanUp(). The recording is then unavailable for retry. Check the upload result before the send and cleanup branches when uploads are enabled. Preserve the intended send behavior when uploads are disabled. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Bump stream-chat before calling uploadFile with an attachment.

The pinned stream-chat@10.0.0-rc.31 defines uploadFile for files, not existing attachments. It converts this attachment into a new file and assigns a new attachment ID. The call also fails type checking. This breaks in-place retries and recording uploads under the declared dependency. Update the dependency and peer requirement to a release that includes attachment support before merging. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
